FC Augsburg (FCA) is a German football club from Augsburg, Bavaria, founded in 1907. It competes in the Bundesliga, Germany’s top football division, and is known for its combative style of play.
Together with 4.000 members, fans, sponsors, committees, and employees, Hamburg design agency Mutabor was tasked to designed the new corporate identity for FC Augsburg. In addition to the pattern, which is used as a central element of the new brand identity, a modified version of Galano Grotesque, along with a custom-designed condensed version of the typeface, was commissioned as another important brand element.
Just like the new pattern, the typeface is inspired by the so-called Zirbelnuss, the symbol of the city of Augsburg, which has been incorporated in a stylized form into the club’s crest. The resulting angled terminals give the typeface its distinctive appearance.
Based on the modification, a new, custom-designed condensed version of Galano Grotesque was developed exclusively for FC Augsburg. This new condensed font incorporates elements from the standard width, such as the angular terminals, allowing the club to make bold statements in headlines.
The typeface family includes a total of three styles: Regular, Bold, and Regular Condensed.
